What are Primtiives

Simply put, Primitives are pieces that show the look of time, and they come in the form of linens, lighting, furniture pieces, or handcrafted decor. Primitives can be new pieces made to look old through paint distressing or with the use of rustic materials, or they can be actual antiques that tell their history through every nick in their paint or patch in their quilting. They offer a sense of nostalgia, and many pieces feel like they tell a story even if they are brand new. This is why some people choose to decorate their entire homes in primitive décor. The warmth and charm of primitives will make a home feel cozier and more inviting, and will make you feel as though you have gone back to a simpler time.

The different types of Primitives-

There are two categories of primitives, antiques and reproduction pieces. People that collect authentic, antique primitives have a distinct advantage over those who collect other forms of antiques that need to be in pristine condition to be valuable. It is the time-worn condition of a primitive that adds value to the collector. The imperfections tell the story of the piece, little scars that are acquired over many years of use add character and charm whether it is in the form of chipped paint revealing a previous color or a repaired patch on a handmade quilt. Primitives tend to be muted in their colors and the flaws in their finishes only add to the charm of the individual piece. Their muted colors show their age if they are antique pieces or mimic age in a newly made piece. This is especially true when it comes to making new pieces look old, craftsmen and designers go out of their way to make their primitives look like they have been around for a hundred years. A good reproduction primitive should look like it has been passed down from generation to generation and has been well loved and used.
